MedTRiM is a collaboration between DNA Definitive, Health Education Improvement Wales (HEIW) and Cardiff & Vale University Health Board (CVUHB). The online course is a proactive, peer delivered cognitive based resource for supporting NHS doctors and nurses who are exposed to trauma. Adapted by Dr Mark Stacey and Andy McCann, the online course is based on trauma resilience training used by the military.

Andy McCann, Co-Director at DNA Definitive said:

“There is mounting concern for the wellbeing of dedicated NHS doctors and nurses due to the coronavirus pandemic. Reports suggest that use of the BMA’s mental health helpline has risen by 80 per cent over the last year.”

MedTRiM was chosen as one of five projects to rapidly pilot their products or services as part of the Welsh Government’s COVID-19 Digital Solutions Fund. The fund aims to rapidly test and evaluate new digital platforms, apps and technologies to determine their long-term use and potential in NHS Wales.

Dr Mark Stacey, Consultant Anaesthetist CVUHB and Associate Dean HEIW, said:

"This is undoubtedly one of the most valuable programmes I've been involved with through my career. The potential benefits to scaling support for colleagues is considerable.”

Traditionally MedTRiM has been delivered in workshop format. As a result of the pandemic the training has been adapted and moved online in order to continue supporting our NHS doctors and nurses who are experiencing trauma first-hand.

Andy said:

“MedTRiM can help to create an atmosphere where staff can initially get people talking, support each other and keep an eye on how people are doing. This should be a valuable addition and supplement other programmes, people and resources that are already in place.”

Frank Atherton, Chief Medical Officer for Wales said:

“We were keen to support the development of technology and solutions through the Digital Solutions Fund which could provide a real impact for citizens. Providing a way for NHS staff to access training to help them manage their wellbeing in work is one way that we can provide vital support. As we work towards a ‘new normal’, MedTRiM training provision online means we can support more of our NHS colleagues in a different but safe way.”

Available as an online learning platform, users will need to be invited to enrol. If you are interested in this resource please email for further details.
